Courthouse Tips

2) How much time will it take me to actually get inside the Courthouse? When planning to attend court, you should take into account the time needed to find parking and the time it will take to pass through security. Each person must walk through a metal detector before gaining access to the Courthouse. Depending on the time of day you arrive, it could take a while to get inside the Courthouse.

3) Can I bring in my cell phone or pager? You may bring in cell phones, pagers, and other such devices to the Courthouse. However, these devices must be off at all times while in a courtroom. Please be respectful of the court and step outside the courtroom should you need to make a telephone call.

4) Should I bring children with me to the Courthouse? As a general rule, children should not be in court, unless they are required to attend as a defendant, victim or witness. If your child is required to be in court, the Courthouse KidsCenter, Inc. provides drop-in child care.

5) What is Courthouse KidsCenter, Inc.? This organization was formed by the Wake County Bar Association Public Service Committee in partnership with other public agencies and private organizations to provide child care for infants to children eight years of age who are required to be in court. 6) Who may use the Courthouse KidsCenter, Inc. day care services? Courthouse KidsCenter, Inc.'s day care services are not available for children of courthouse personnel, staff, attorneys or jurors.

7) Who is the Clerk of Superior Court in Wake County? The Honorable Gilbert W. File.

8) What responsibilities does the Clerk of Superior Court's office handle? The Clerk serves as the Probate Judge regarding the probate of wills, presides over incompetency and guardianship proceedings, foreclosure, partitions, legitimations, name changes, adoptions and many civil hearings. The Clerk's office is also responsible for filing, processing and maintaining all documents filed in all court cases. Additionally, the Clerk oversees the receipt, investment and distributions of charges assessed for court fees, traffic citations and fines.
